Beyond Advocacy: Building Stronger Learning Communities Through Authentic Parent Engagement
As student learning changes in the province, so too will the traditional relationship between parents and the school. The shift should be towards partnerships that more meaningfully involve parents in the learning enterprise. What might this look like and feel like for parents as we move down the road towards a new conception of learning expressed in the BC Education Plan?

Erupting Angst: Understanding the collision between anger & aggression in the world of anxiety
This workshop will seek to provide an understanding of the reasons why anger and aggression often become the challenging mask behind which anxiety hides. The experience of anxiety in the growing child is one that constantly moves and shifts in how it presents. Often, rather than showing its colors through sadness and tears, anxiety presents with anger and aggression. In fact, it is typically the symptoms of “irritability,” “defiance,” and outwardly or inwardly directed “aggression” that results in parents’ pursuit of supports for themselves and/or their child. In this workshop we will explore exactly why anxiety is often expressed through the explosive and/or simmering symptoms of anger and aggression. In knowing these connections, we will position ourselves to better understand the response our children need from us in the face of their erupting angst.

Helping Children & Youth Transition to New Environments
Larissa and Evelyn bring over 25 years of collective experience working first hand with children and youth, their parents and educators, in a variety of school settings. This conversation will largely focus on easing concerns, and enhancing an overall understanding about how parents can best navigate the school system, particularly during key transition periods. The good news is that schools are getting better at recognizing and supporting students who have vulnerable mental health needs. The even better news is that parent advocacy, along with strong agency support, is what is driving the improvements. We’re in it together.

We have come to understand that many common experiences are potentially traumatizing including medical procedures, accidents, and high impact falls as well as the whole spectrum of challenging human relationships. Recent advances in research expands our understanding of trauma and its impact on a child's functioning in almost every aspect of their lives. We also know that traumatized children who get the support they need are more likely to recover from these painful experiences.
